The Four Standard Drill Bit Sizing Systems
1. Fractional Sizes (ANSI B94.11M)
Based on common fractional inch divisions from 1/64" (0.0156") up to 1-3/4" in 1/64-inch increments. Widely used across North American machining and fabrication.
2. Number / Wire Gauge Sizes (#80 to #1)
Derived from Stubs Steel Wire Gauge. Number #80 is the smallest (0.0135" / 0.343mm) and descends down to #1 (0.2280" / 5.791mm). Essential for small precision tapping and screw clearances.
3. Letter Sizes (A to Z)
Letter sizes bridge the gap between Wire Gauge #1 and 1/4". Size 'A' begins at 0.2340" (5.944mm) and 'Z' terminates at 0.4130" (10.490mm). Commonly used for standard clearance holes and pre-tap drills.
4. Metric Sizes (ISO 235)
Millimeter drills commonly manufactured in 0.1 mm increments below 13.0 mm and in 0.5 mm steps up to 32.0 mm. Global standard for ISO and DIN manufacturing.
