The Drill Point Geometry Error

Standard CAM quoting often underestimates cycle time by 10% to 25% by calculating feed travel only on nominal hole depth. On through holes, the conical drill point (e.g. 3.0 mm for a 10 mm 118° drill) plus 1.0–1.5 mm breakthrough clearance must be added to total feed travel before full cylindrical diameter is achieved.

Rapid Travel & G00 Acceleration

On deep pecking cycles (G83), rapid traverse time can equal or exceed cutting feed time. Real machines require acceleration and deceleration ramps between pecks. In high-volume production, optimizing peck counts or upgrading to high-pressure through-coolant carbide can cut cycle times by over 60%.

Bottom Dwell Cost vs. Surface Finish

A 0.2 to 0.5 second dwell (P word in G82) is critical when spotting or counterboring to produce a flat, chatter-free bottom face. However, dwelling longer than 0.5 seconds work-hardens stainless steel and prematurely dulls the drill corner margins.
