Drilling Depth Parameters
Decremental schedules prevent chips from packing when flutes are submerged deep inside the hole.

Why Decremental Pecks Win
At the top of the hole, chips easily curl out and eject. As the drill plunges deeper (5×D, 7×D, 10×D), chips must travel further up the flutes against heavy friction. Decreasing each subsequent peck step (3D → 2D → 1D → 0.5D) limits chip volume, preventing flute pack-off and drill shearing.
Custom Macro vs Constant Q
Standard G83 uses a single fixed Q value, which must be set conservatively small to survive the bottom of the hole—wasting valuable time near the top! Many modern CNC controls (Fanuc Custom Macro B, Haas Variable Peck) allow programmed decremental peck steps using variables or I, J, K words.
Peck Retract Clearance
When using G83, verify your CNC parameter for the rapid re-entry clearance distance (typically 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm above the previous cut depth). Re-entering too aggressively can slam the drill into chips left at the bottom, chipping the cutting corners.
